#Callingtheshots – Capturing fun and warmth.

‘Planned Fun’ is a bit of an oxymoron. So planning to capture genuine moments of laughter and friendship on photoshoots takes a little bit of guile. Recently Outsiders were lucky enough to grab some shoot time in the Alps in between travel restrictions. Our objective was to capture footage and stills for TOG24’s winter and ski campaign. Fun and warmth are essential to express the TOG24 brand correctly, so it was vital to catch some real moments of laughter. Scroll down for our #Callingtheshots tips.

Four people laughing on a Ski-Doo. Outsiders agency for TOG24
  1. Don’t agonise over each shot. You’re not looking for formally composed ‘magazine covers’ – you’re capturing a feeling.

  2. Make sure the videographer / photographer are well briefed and always shooting. Sometimes moments present themselves completely off plan.

  3. Group energy matters. Work quickly and try not to have people waiting around.

  4. Get people talking, laughing and doing. It’s the art director’s job to keep things happening; it’s the photographer’s job to capture it.

  5. If the models want to mess about – let them. Messing around is fun.

  6. It’s fantastic if the models have worked together before – even better if they are all friends.

  7. If someone wants to lend you a Ski-doo, say yes. Immediately.

  8. Overshoot. Editing software is very quick these days.

  9. Have scenes, situations and locations planned and ready. Also be ready to abandon them quickly if they are not working, or someone sees / suggests something more fun.

  10. Glühwein always helps.

Here are a few behind the scenes shots from our couple of fun days in the Alps. A huge thank you to Neil McNair for able guiding and to our wonderful Tignes locals for getting stuck in to the silliness.
