#Callingtheshots – That’s Snowbusiness!

Our senior creative Martin O'Neill shares his thoughts on capturing a bit of Christmas spirit. (Also it's Christmas themed, puns are non-negotiable, you have been warned):

Creating a bit of Christmas cheer in a studio setting can be something of a challenge. Especially when the festive season is still a good couple of months away. But unlike your Christmas shopping, seasonal shoots shouldn’t be left until the last minute. Planning is key, but it’s also important to bring a healthy dollop of festive fun as well. We recently wrapped on a Christmas shoot for TOG24, here are our tips for getting the most out of the big day

1. Make a list. Check it twice.

A comprehensive shoot document makes sure everyone’s on the same page. Shot list, props list, running order, cast and crew, etc. It’ll ensure everyone knows what’s happening and the days don’t drift.

2. Be Merry and Bright.

If you’re looking for fun, energetic shots, it helps to have a fun, energetic atmosphere. The aforementioned shoot plan will take a lot of the organisational stress out of the day, allowing you to focus on keeping spirits bright. Dogs definitely help with this.

3. Get the lights up.

If you’re shooting stills and video, a powerful and well thought out lighting set up that works for both is a major time saver. (Big hat tip to Jonathan Oakes and Ed the assistant). Flash is sooooo 2021.

4. Make a resolution.

If you need video in landscape and portrait, and the intended media channel is exclusively digital, shooting 16:9 in 4k (or higher) means you can crop to portrait and cover off both. Just ensure you leave enough space around your subject.

5. Yule be held responsible.

As art director, the buck stops with you. So make sure all big creative decisions are agreed ahead of the day and the concepts are clear to everyone. You don’t want to shoot by committee. That way, any suggestions or ideas that people have on the day will add to the creative, not detract from it.
