A day of Proper Play. Authentic kids outdoor clothing photography for TOG24.

“Celebrate the complete and utter chaos and unbridled joy of children playing outside”

That was the brief; capture some ‘Proper’ play for Tog24. What did that entail? Letting the four kids in question lead the way, essentially, and try to keep up. They are the play specialists after all and being paid (via willing parents) to do what they do best – it was our job to intervene as little as possible, not let them get hungry or fall in the pond (75% success rate on the later).

Kids are fast. So even in the relatively confined space of a south Manchester back garden, we soon realised shooting tethered was not practical. Nor was setting up too much of a scene - keep the attention off the camera is the way to avoid unnatural posing. Wait until they’re immersed in running, digging, bouncing or whatever, then start shooting.

Bring props and endless ideas. Plan’s B and C come round quickly when the talent has a short attention plan, so make such you can go well down the plan alphabet. A good location helped us here, already home to several little ones who had clearly worn in the activities on offer. Trampolines are a winner.

Shoot days are tiring for everyone, especially little people. Know when your time is up and don’t expect them to go on forever. And lastly, don’t say ‘one more shot’ until you really mean it as you cannot break a promise to a 6 year old!

In summary: Bring snacks. Let them do their thing. Don’t expect to stick to your plan and leave the water fight until the end.
